Dr. Matthew Cooper graduated from Grand View University in Des Moines, IA. He attended The School of Professional Psychology at Forest Institute where he earned a Masters and Doctorate in Clinical Psychology. In graduate school, Dr. Cooper completed a child and adolescent track to expand his clinical knowledge. He has worked in a variety of settings including inpatient psychiatric hospitals, jail, juvenile court, adult probation and parole, and private practice. Dr. Cooper primarily sees clients for individual psychotherapy and psychological testing. Dr. Cooper uses a broad range of clinical techniques. His primary therapeutic orientation is cognitive behavioral therapy. However, he accepts and values other therapeutic orientations and integrates these principles into his therapeutic repertoire (e.g. DBT). A therapeutic relationship is an important part of the treatment course. Therefore, it is helpful for Dr. Cooper to get to know you through this process. Faith is an important part of Dr. Cooper’s life and approach as a psychologist. He believes that his role as a psychologist is that of a change agent, a facilitator to help his clients work through whatever may have brought them to therapy. Dr. Cooper’s clinical experience includes treating/assessing various concerns including anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, personality disorders, learning issues, depression, bipolar disorder, ADHD, PTSD, and other psychological/emotional problems. He also conducts forensic evaluations for local and federal courts.

Dr. Matthew Cooper is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist with additional training to provide integrated psychological services and medication management for the treatment of mental health disorders. Dr. Cooper graduated from Grand View University in Des Moines, IA and then attended The School of Professional Psychology at Forest Institute where he earned a Masters and Doctorate in Clinical Psychology. In 2021, Dr. Cooper earned a Masters in Clinical Psychopharmacology from New Mexico State University, which allowed him to become the third conditional prescribing psychologist in Iowa. In graduate school, Dr. Cooper completed a child and adolescent track to expand his clinical knowledge. He has worked in a variety of settings including inpatient psychiatric hospitals, county jails, juvenile court, adult probation and parole, and private practice. In addition to private practice services, Dr. Cooper provides forensic evaluations for Juvenile Court Services. Dr. Cooper recently started providing medication management services for Central Iowa Trauma Recovery Center (CITRC). CITRC utilizes innovative trauma-informed practices that are evidence-based and interventions that are designed to help understand, enhance, empower, and foster resilience for survivors and their families. Dr. Cooper is a consultant/provider for the Iowa Wild (AHL Hockey).

Faith is an important part of Dr. Cooper’s life and approach as a clinical psychologist. He believes that his role as a psychologist is that of a change agent, a facilitator to help his patients work through whatever may have brought them to therapy or seek medication management services. Dr. Cooper sees patients for individual psychotherapy and psychiatric medication management services depending on insurance, along with occasional psychological assessments. Dr. Cooper’s theoretical orientation is primarily cognitive behavioral therapy and dialectical behavioral therapy. However, he accepts and values other therapeutic orientations and integrates these principles into his therapeutic repertoire (e.g., motivational interviewing). Medication management can also assist in the overall treatment plan and may help to reduce symptoms. Dr. Cooper’s clinical experience includes treating/assessing various mental health issues including anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, personality disorders, learning issues, depression, psychotic disorders, bipolar disorder, ADHD, PTSD, and other psychological disorders.
Regarding psychiatric medication services, Dr. Cooper is a Conditional Prescribing Psychologist in the state of Iowa, supervised by Dr. Darbie Little-Cooper, a board certified family physician and psychiatrist. Dr. Cooper is required by state law to collaborate with your/your child’s primary care provider at the beginning of treatment and when medication changes are made. Prior to your/your child’s first appointment for medication management, you as the patient or as the child’s parent, guardian, or representative, authorizations must be signed for Dr. Cooper to communicate with your/your child’s primary care provider and with Dr. Little-Cooper. An authorization allowing for Dr. Little-Cooper to consult with your/your child’s primary care provider will also need to be signed. Dr. Cooper is unable to provide medication management services without collaboration with your/your child’s primary care provider and his supervisor.
Dr. Cooper works in the office Tuesday through Thursday and his times may vary on Monday/Fridays (telehealth), so please complete a new patient request to find out more information or to make an appointment.
Dr. Cooper takes the following insurance: Wellmark BCBS, BCBS (other states/federal), Aetna, Cigna, Midlands Choice, and Health Partners.
